Mounting your moss pole
To mount the moss pole in the pot without accessories, insert it into the substrate up to the bottom of the mesh. For a sturdier moss pole, the matching pedestal or the foundation can be used. In this case you can refer to the pedestal guide or the foundation guide - The length of moss poles can be increased by stacking a new moss pole in the hole on top. With a large plant/high moss pole, it is advisable to use a strong, heavy plant pot so that the pot does not fall over by the weight of your plant. With a moss pole of 150 cm or higher, we advise you to our foundation Alternatively, you can use cable ties to tie a bamboo stick/plantstick to the mesh for additional support. The steel mesh is great for this purpose.
Watering of moss pole
The pole can easily be kept wet using the dripper from our webshop. The dripper ensures that the moss has time to absorb the water and reduces the risk of overwatering your houseplant. For more information on how to use the dripper, please visit this page Filling the dropper is equivalent to spraying about 200 times with a plant sprayer! Alternatively, the moss pole can be kept wet by gently pouring water on top of it, or by spraying it wet with an (automatic) plant sprayer. Like most houseplants, the moss pole stands best with high humidity and away from drafts.
Helping plants climb
Keeping the moss pole wet stimulates the growth of aerial roots from the plant stem. However, it is not a problem for the roots if the pole is occasionally dry, as this is not always the case in nature either (think of tree bark drying up after rainfall). To give the plant a helping hand, the root tips can be held against the pole using adjustable clips. This way the plant can also be secured to the pole according to your preference. Five clips are included with the purchase of a moss pole. After a while, the plant will grow against the moss pole all by itself!
Watering of potting soil
Als je de mospaal vaak genoeg water geeft, hoeft de potgrond eigenlijk nooit te worden bewaterd. Vanuit de mospaal zal namelijk wat water naar het potgrond lopen. Klimplanten houden van een luchtige potgrond mix, waarin overtollig water goed kan worden afgevoerd en makkelijk uit kan verdampen. Denk hier bijvoorbeeld bij aan een mix van kokosblokjes, perliet en veenmos. Bovendien maken de kokosblokjes en het perliet de potgrond extra stevig, wat ten goeden komt van jouw mospaal. Pruning the plant
In general, you can't grow a houseplant higher than two feet, because the plant will be too close to the ceiling of your house. This is where the top part of your plant won't get enough light to continue producing large leaves. Thank goodness you provided your plant with a moss pole! That's because this allows you to cut your plant in half at a height of about 1 meter, without having to let the cut portion die. After all, your plant has already grown roots within the moss pole. You can transfer the cut-off section to a new pot with moss post and all. Roots that have grown from the cut section of your plant to the lower part of your moss pole can best be retained as much as possible. Do this by gently pulling these roots out of the pole. The roots you pulled out can be placed in the substrate of your new pot. This way you will have a nice new plant with it, and the plant will just continue to produce large leaves. Because of the high quality sphagnum moss we use for our moss poles, the moss poles have a very long shelf life and you can keep using the same pole just fine.
Dealing with mold
Ondanks dat Sphagnum mos van nature langzaam afbreekt, kan het voorkomen dat de mospaal wat beschimmeld raakt. Schimmels laten zich vooral zien op het moment nadat het mos voor het eerst nat wordt gemaakt. Deze pluizige schimmels breken voedingsresten af, die vervolgens weer door de plant kunnen worden opgenomen. Voor je plant is dit dus alleen maar voordelig. Het is een teken van een gezond ecosysteem in het substraat. De schimmel is ook niet slecht voor je eigen gezondheid, zoals bij de zwarte schimmels wel het geval is. Wel kan het nadelig zijn voor de mooie uitstraling van je mospaal. Je kan de schimmel makkelijk van de mospaal halen door het pluis van dichtbij met een plantenspuit van de paal af te sproeien, of door het eraf te wrijven. Het komt dan ook vaak niet meer terug. Als de schimmel wel terugkomt, kan dit betekenen dat je te vaak water geeft aan je mospaal. Je hoeft de paal alleen van water te voorzien wanneer de bovenste helft wat droog aanvoelt.
